5 Day Geological Discovery Tour from Marrakesh Itinerary :

Day 1Marrakesh – High Atlas Mountains – Nkob

Leave Marrakech, and venture over the amazing High Atlas Mountains via Tizi n’Tichka Pass with views and Berber villages, drive past Ouarzazate and wonderful Draa Valley (palm groves and ancient Kasbahs). Arrive to Nkob where you will stay for the night; this pretty village is known for its oasis with its mudbrick houses. Overnight Nkob.

Day 2Nkob – Calymene Trilobite Site – Issoumour – Merzouga

Breakfast. Travel to Alnif, visit a fossil workshop where you can learn how trilobites and other fossils are prepared, and see some fine Calymene trilobites being removed from the rock. Leave to a famous Calymene fossil bed where you can investigate the fossil layers and have a chance of finding some. Move on to the Issoumour fossil area, where Paleozoic rocks have produced a large number of different fossils. In the afternoon, we proceed to Merzouga, on the border of the great Erg Chebbi dunes. Night in a hotel.

Day 3Kem Kem Beds – Filon 12 – Sahara Desert Camp

After breakfast, drive to the well-known Kem Kem Beds, one of the most significant fossil beds in North Africa and a site that has produced evidence of dinosaurs, huge fish, crocodiles, turtles and other extinct species from over 90 million years ago. Visit Filon 12, a well-known mineral collecting locality within the area, with a number of mineral specimens to be found. In the late afternoon, travel back to Merzouga and ride camels into the dunes of Erg Chebbi, marvel at the sunset over the desert, and then reach your typical Sahara Desert camp for a night.

Day 4Merzouga – Crinoid Fossil Site – Valley of Roses

Following your breakfast in Merzouga, depart from Merzouga and explore a site of crinoids, marine fossils, preserved within limestone, before continuing towards Jorf. Here, you will discover traditional khettara, an underground network of canals feeding an oasis for hundreds of years, before crossing the landscape which changes form (palm, plain, traditional villages) in the direction of the Valley of the Roses, where you will spend the night.

Day 5Merzouga → Todgha Gorges → Rose Valley

After breakfast, head back to Marrakesh, traveling through the impressive desert landscapes of southern Morocco. You will stop to visit a traditional salt mine, to discover the traditional techniques used to collect and process the salt. Journey to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ait Benhaddou, one of the most well-preserved and famous fortified Kasbahs in Morocco. After visiting the earthy architecture and hearing about its history as a former caravan station, you can have a relaxing lunch. Next, you will travel through the High Atlas Mountains, crossing the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, stopping at scenic spots to admire the stunning surroundings. You will arrive back in Marrakesh late afternoon/early evening, and your 5-Day Geological Discovery Tour from Marrakesh will end.

FAQ :

Where can I find fossils and minerals in Morocco?

Morocco is one of the world’s richest countries for fossils and minerals. Key fossil-rich regions include Erfoud, Alnif, and the Anti-Atlas / Saharan border zones, where trilobites, ammonites, orthoceras, and other marine fossils are commonly found.

Do I need a permit to collect fossils or minerals on a tour?

For most guided tours, no special permit is required for surface collecting of small specimens. However, export of fossils and minerals is regulated by Moroccan law. Our experienced guides will ensure that all collecting activities comply with local regulations, and any large or scientifically significant discoveries must be properly reported.

Can I keep the fossils or minerals I find during the tour?

Yes! On our tours, guests are welcome to keep small surface specimens as personal souvenirs. For larger or unique discoveries, our team will guide you on the appropriate procedures in accordance with Moroccan laws.

What is the best time of year to join a geological or fossil tour in Morocco?

The ideal time for these tours is from October to April, when the weather is mild and pleasant. Summer months can be very hot in desert areas, so we recommend cooler seasons for the best comfort and exploration experience.

Are your tours suitable for families or beginners?

Absolutely! Our tours are designed for all levels of interest, from professional geologists to families and curious travelers. Our guides explain geological and fossil concepts in simple, engaging ways, so everyone can enjoy and learn, regardless of background or experience.

What should I bring on a fossil and mineral tour?

We recommend bringing:

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen
  • Light layers of clothing (for both warm days and cool evenings)
  • A small backpack for your items
  • Optional gloves or wrapping material for your specimens
